West Side CSO Swan Island Pump Station and Nicolai Shafts:
00During preliminary design, Jacobs Associates assisted with selection of shaft sites, shaft configurations, geotechnical assessments and preliminary design alternatives. Jacobs Associates provided cost estimates for the preferred shaft configurations and methods. Jacobs Associates also provided detailed structural design and engineering services during construction. At the Nicolai shaft, a structural evaluation based on the as-built slurry wall geometry was performed and details for remedial repairs were developed.
00Jacobs Associates used an innovative method of structural analysis at Nicolai to show that the unlined slurry wall above the break-in / break-out structure had sufficient capacity to withstand an earthquake. This saved time by deferring the lining of the shaft until the tunneling operations are completed, allowing for an earlier mobilization of the TBM. During construction, Jacobs Associates has provided construction management services under a prime contract with BES, in a supplementary approach by which JA employees are incorporated into an integrated team with the Bureau of Environmental Services own construction management group.
