San Vicente to Second Aqueduct Pipeline
Location: San Diego, California
Owners: San Diego County Water Authority
Market: Water
Construction Cost: $198 Million (Approximate)
Construction Start/End: 2005/2008
Jacobs Associates’ Role: Prime Design Consultant, and Lead Tunnel and Shaft Designer
This project connects one of San Diego County’s major water storage facilities, the San Vicente Reservoir, with the facility that imports water from Northern California, the Second Aqueduct. Part of the owner's $827-million Emergency Storage Project, the San Vicente Pipeline will help sustain the region in the event of an interruption in water delivery due to a major earthquake.
Approximately 11 miles of pipeline run through a newly-constructed tunnel. Excavation through sedimentary, volcanic, and granite rocks utilizes an 11.5-foot-diameter hard rock tunnel boring machine, two 12-foot, 2-inch digger shields, and drill-and-blast methods. The tunnel excavation, broken into six reaches, also involved constructing three access shafts and a portal.
