The Northern Sewerage Project (NSP), developed jointly by Melbourne Water and Yarra Valley Water, addresses future sewerage requirements of Melbourne, Australia’s northern suburbs. Once completed, the NSP will reduce sewage spills into the Upper Merri Creek and North Darebin Creek catchments during heavy rainfall. The project also will increase the region’s sewerage system capacity to service future development.

Stage 1 of the NSP consists of approximately 8.4 kilometers of gravity sewer, divided into four main tunnel reaches, and five major work shafts. Tunnel depth will vary from 15 to 60 meters, and the pipeline's internal diameter will range from 1.65 to 2.5 meters to suit hydraulic requirements of each alignment section. Stage 1's main working shaft, 60 meters deep and 11.5 meters in internal diameter, will support three rail marshalling and launch chambers for tunnel boring machines. The majority of tunneling will encounter weak, interbedded siltstone and sandstone of the Silurian Formation.
