Narragansett Bay Commission Combined Sewer Overflow, Phase I

This project necessitated excavating multiple deep shafts (for TBM access, drop, and ventilation purposes) located within the heart of downtown Providence and along its historic waterfront. Construction within this urban environment posed challenges such as environmental issues associated with contaminated soils and water, and postage-stamp size sites.

Phase I also involved building a 50-million-gallons-per-day pump station within a sequentially-excavated 120- by 68- by 68-foot cavern. In addition, the project scope included gate and screening structures, diversion/relief structures, and conveyance conduits. A combination of drill and blast, microtunneling, and pipe jacking methods has produced about 8,000 feet of tunneled adits, connecting to the deaeration chambers and drop shafts, and consolidation pipelines, collecting the combined sewerage from existing CSOs.
