Heartland Corridor Clearance Improvement Project

In addition to the tunnel improvements, the project entails modifying seven through-truss bridges and nine slide direction fences, lowering tracks at three overhead bridges, and raising three sets of overhead wires.

Jacobs Associates provides tunnel design review and construction inspection services as a subconsultant to STV/Ralph Whitehead Associates. Other subconsultants on the construction management team include AMEC and Anderson and Associates.

Norfolk Southern, the states of Virginia, Ohio, and West Virginia, and the federal government formed a public/private partnership to fund the Heartland Corridor, designated as a Project of National and Regional Significance under the recently enacted Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA LU) legislation.
