Claremont Tunnel Seismic Upgrade
Excavation of the bypass tunnel was conducted primarily by roadheader and supplemented with localized drill-and-blast methods. Mining encountered variable ground including Franciscan mélange, fault gouge, and sedimentary units containing sandstone and shale. In addition to the new bypass tunnel the remaining 3 miles of tunnel was systematically contact grouted and received structural lining repairs to promote better ground/liner interaction during a seismic event.
Jacobs Associates served as the prime consultant, leading a project team that identified engineering alternatives and completed final design—including plans, specifications, and the engineer’s estimate. During construction, Jacobs Associates also provided specialized construction management support, resident engineering, and inspection services.
