This 3.4-mile-long, 9-foot-diameter horseshoe tunnel delivers approximately 175 million gallons of treated water per day to about 840,000 people. Before Claremont’s rehabilitation, a major earthquake could have rendered it inoperable for several months—the tunnel’s location astride the Hayward Fault had already resulted in 13 inches of lateral offset in the original 1920s-era tunnel. Fortunately, the Claremont Tunnel recently underwent a major seismic upgrade. A bypass tunnel through the Hayward Fault zone, and seismic retrofits to the remainder of the tunnel, ensures that residents in the area will have the water they need for consumption and firefighting following a major earthquake.
