The Caldecott tunnels are located on State Route 24 and pass through the Berkeley Hills connecting the cities of Oakland and Orinda. The Caldecott 4th Bore will provide another two traffic lane tunnel that will be dedicated to west bound traffic with the goal of relieving traffic congestion in the off-peak direction. The existing tunnels, Bores 1 and 2 constructed in the mid-1930s and Bore 3 constructed in the 1960s, are all two lane tunnels, so with the construction of the 4th Bore there will be four traffic lanes for each direction. In addition to providing bottleneck relief, the 4th Bore will meet serviceability requirements for a seismic event with an estimated peak ground acceleration of 1.2g.
