Redwood Trunk Sewer
Location: Oxnard, California
Owner: City of Oxnard
Client: Kennedy/Jenks Consultants
00Jacobs Associates provided as-needed consulting services to evaluate trenchless design/construction alternatives for the Redwood Trunk Sewer. The proposed gravity sewer consisted of 60-, 48-, 42-, and 36- inch reaches, for a total of approximately 48,500 feet.
00Jacobs Associates also provided final design services that included specifications for microtunneling, shaft construction, and ground movement monitoring; mark-up of drawings for constructability; and an Engineer's estimate of construction costs. The proposed gravity sewer, as designed, utilized microtunneling construction for 15,000 feet of 60- inch and 10,000 feet of 42- inch reaches of gravity sewers, for a total of approximately 25,000 feet. Anticipated ground conditions were flowing silts and sands at depths ranging from 20 to 35 feet. The reaches that were excluded from microtunneling were generally shallower and dry and in a separate design and bid package. The successful low bidder for the microtunneling was $33.4 million, which was in the midrange of the Engineer's estimate of construction costs of $31.4 to $38.4 million.
