00Río Piedras Station
- Stacked Drift Tunnel: The Río Piedras Station, 150 meters long
by 19 meters wide by 16 meters high, is one of the largest-diameter soil
tunnels ever constructed. This structure was built using a stacked drift
scheme in which the tunnel lining, consisting of 15 concrete-filled drifts,
is constructed to form a horseshoe-shaped compression arch. Construction
of the arch is followed by removal of the soil core under the arch. Factors
such as variable soil conditions, relatively shallow tunnel depth (less
than 5 meters), and small permissible ground settlements influenced this
innovative design and construction approach.
