00These wine storage caves were constructed within a hill composed of alluvial and volcanic deposits. Roadheaders excavated through weak, highly to completely weathered sandstone, siltstone and poorly consolidated claystone. Cover over the 13-foot diameter tunnels ranges from 10 to 30 feet. Jacobs Associates was responsible for assessment of geotechnical conditions and preliminary design of the wine cave complex, and provided recommendations on excavation feasibility, layout of the tunnels, stand-up time of the ground, surface settlement, and design of tunnel support. Jacobs Associates recommended support consisting of W4 steel ribs or lattice girders encased in shotcrete.
