Chateau Montelena Wine Caves
00Location: Calistoga, California
00Owner: Chateau Montelena Winery
00Client: Nordby Wine Caves
00Constructed within a knoll for wine storage adjacent to a winery building, this series of interconnecting tunnels totals approximately 900 feet in length with an excavated diameter of 13 feet. Excavation was performed by roadheaders through 7,000 psi rhyolite and tuff in conditions ranging from massive to weathered and highly fractured. Cover over the tunnels ranges from 6 to 90 feet, and adjacent tunnels in the storage complex are spaced as close as 25 feet apart. Tunnel support consisted of 4000 psi, 4-inch thick shotcrete. Steel ribs provided support at the portals and in areas containing highly fractured rock. Thicker shotcrete lining was specified for one of the portals where a service road passed above. Jacobs Associates was responsible for assessment of geotechnical conditions and preliminary design of the wine cave complex, and provided recommendations on excavation feasibility, layout of the tunnels, and design of tunnel support. During construction, Jacobs Associates provided periodic inspection of tunneling operations.
