00Jacobs Associates provided tunnel design services for the Esmeralda and Pacific Tunnel rehabilitation projects, performed for the El Dorado Irrigation District (EID) as part of a design-build team. Both tunnels were built by PG&E in the 1930's for water conveyance. The Esmeralda Tunnel is approximately 1500 feet long and includes a 7-foot wide by 7-foot tall timber-supported section and an 8-foot wide by 8-foot tall unlined section. The Pacific Tunnel is 150 feet long and includes a 9-foot wide by 6-foot tall timber-supported section and a 10-foot wide by 7-foot tall unlined section.
00The primary purpose of the rehabilitation project was to provide tunnel stability in portions where the timber lining had significantly deteriorated while continuing to maintain the required flow capacities. Due to critical operating schedule constraints, work on both tunnels was performed under a design-build project delivery method, with the construction being performed by M. A. Suden Mining Construction and the engineering being performed by Jacobs Associates.
