00This 8 foot finished diameter sewer is being constructed in a 5.3-mile long, 13-foot diameter tunnel under the densely populated eastern portion of downtown Los Angeles. The tunnel has been driven through alluvial soils and weak sedimentary rock with up to 100 feet of groundwater pressure. Because of varying geology and a tight project delivery schedule, the contract required the use of three tunnel boring machines, two earth pressure balance machines for the soft ground reaches and one shielded rock machine for the drive in bedrock.
