Michael T. McRae, DEng, PE, GE

Principal

Mike McRae’s 25 years of experience encompasses a broad range of engineering services on underground projects, including technical design and project management on highway, transit, water, wastewater, and experimental underground openings. He joined Jacobs Associates in 1994 after receiving his doctorate in geotechnical/geological engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, where his research focused on the behavior of deep excavations in weathered rock and the design of pressure tunnels. Currently, Dr. McRae is leading the Jacobs Associates design team responsible for the underground stations that are part of the Ottawa Light Rail Project, while also leading the firm’s team working on the Waterview Highway Tunnels in Auckland, New Zealand. He is continuing to oversee the construction of the Caldecott 4th Bore Project in Oakland, California, a project for which he served as design project manager.

As project manager and designer, his past projects have included transit and highway tunnel projects and water resources tunnel projects such as the Tren Urbano–Rio Piedras subway in San Juan, Puerto Rico; the M5 East Motorway tunnels in Sydney, Australia; the Melbourne City Link highway tunnels in Melbourne, Australia; the Lake Mathews Outlet Facilities in Riverside, California; the San Vicente Pipeline Project, in San Diego County, California; and the Arrowhead Tunnels of the Inland Feeder System in San Bernardino, California. These past projects were delivered using a variety of delivery strategies, including design-bid-build, design-build, and a project alliance.

Dr. McRae has written numerous technical papers for geotechnical and underground engineering journals and conferences and has contributed to many tunneling industry publications. He has a BS in Civil Engineering, an MS in Geological Engineering, and a Doctor of Engineering in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a registered professional civil and geotechnical engineer in California and a registered professional civil engineer in Utah and New York.
