Brightwater Earns Prestigious International Honor

The Brightwater Conveyance System recently received a “Highly Commended” designation in the Tunnelling Project of the Year category (for projects between $100 million and $1 billion) at the International Tunnelling Awards Ceremony. The ceremony was held in Hong Kong on December 1, 2012.

The Brightwater project is a major improvement to Seattle’s regional sewerage treatment system. The project includes approximately 13 miles (21 km) of soft-ground tunnels, 40 to 440 feet (12 to 134 m) underground. Tunnel construction employed 14- to 19.5-foot-diameter (4.3 to 5.9 m) pressure-face tunnel boring machines, launched and retrieved via deep shafts in glacial tills well below the water table.

In a joint venture with MWH, Jacobs Associates provided preliminary and final design services for all of the conveyance contracts, as well as engineering assistance during the construction phase. The joint venture contractors were Jay Dee Coluccio Taisei and Jay Dee Coluccio, who also won the International Tunnelling Award for Tunnelling Contractor of the Year.
