The Brightwater Conveyance System Reaches Milestones

In June, the West Tunnel and eastbound Central Tunnel of the Brightwater Conveyance System both reached breakthroughs. The West Tunnel (BT-4) consists of 21,200 feet of 12-foot-internal-diameter tunnel. It starts at the Point Wells Portal in unincorporated Snohomish County and heads east to the Ballinger Way Portal in Shoreline. This tunnel was on target for breakthrough after four miles of tunneling. The eastbound Central Tunnel (BT-2) consists of 11,600 feet of 14.4-foot-internal-diameter tunnel, extending from the North Kenmore Portal to the North Creek Portal in Bothell.

The Brightwater Conveyance System is a major improvement to Seattle, Washington’s regional sewerage treatment system. Construction of the Brightwater system started in 2006; the system is expected to be operating in the fall of 2011.
