Pacific Northwest Papers Presented at NAT Conference
Various papers related to some of Jacobs Associates’ Pacific Northwest projects were presented at the North American Tunnel (NAT) conference that took place in Portland in June.
Sue Bednarz cowrote a paper titled, “The History of Tunneling in Portland—Rail, Highways, and the Environment,” which explores the diverse tunneling methods that have been used in Portland since the early 1900s. A front view photo of an open-face pneumatic shield with overhanging canopy is pictured above. The shield was used in 1967 to mine the Portsmouth Tunnel in Portland, Oregon. Other authors include Paul Gribbon from Portland's Bureau of Environmental Services, and Joseph Gildner from Sound Transit.
Peter Raleigh, Sam Swartz, and Phaidra Campbell cowrote a paper titled, “Integration of Operations and Underground Construction: Sound Transit University Link,” which discusses the decision-making methodology and design solution of the bored tunnel connection between the Central Link and the University Link tunnels currently being constructed for Sound Transit in Seattle. John Sleavin, from Sound Transit, was also an author.
Greg Colzani cowrote a risk management paper titled, “Risk Management to Make Informed, Contingency-Based CIP Decision,” which discusses the evolution of the risk management process utilized by the City of Portland’s Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) throughout the early development of the $800 million (USD) Willamette River Combined Sewer Overflow Program. It explores the implementation of the project’s risk management program to develop and manage BES-wide CIP contingencies. Other authors include Paul Gribbon and Christa Overby from Portland's Bureau of Environmental Services, and Julius Strid from EPC Consultants.
