Jacobs Associates Acquires Abey Structural
September 01, 2009 - Jacobs Associates is pleased to announce the acquisition of Keith Abey Structural Engineer, Inc., an Oakland-based structural engineering firm. The acquisition will help meet the demand for a structural interface with teaming partners such as architects and mechanical engineers, while expanding our expertise in structural engineering. Jacobs Associates’ Board of Directors approved the acquisition, which includes the purchase of firm assets and backlog of work.
Abey Structural brings new services to Jacobs Associates, including the ability to better address historic buildings and other types of urban structures. The firm has provided structural engineering to a broad market, including commercial, institutional, and residential projects; as well as specialized services, such as supporting sculpture installations and other structural finishes. This diverse background will enable Jacobs Associates to deal with the functional aspects of underground facilities, such as mass transit stations, more effectively.
The acquisition is a direct result of both Abey Structural and Jacobs Associates’ efforts to best meet the needs of customers. According to Principal Dan Adams, “We listened to our clients when they asked us to increase our detailed structural engineering capacity for underground transit stations. Post acquisition, the firm will coordinate more effectively during design development, better integrating structural systems with architectural concepts.”
Abey Structural projects will receive an added focus on implementation, through additional services such as construction management and geotechnical engineering. “Joining Jacobs Associates allows me to deliver additional resources and specialty technical expertise, such as advanced analysis and modeling, to existing clients,” says Abey Structural Principal Keith Abey, who joined the firm as an Associate.
