Innovation

We’ve built our business on thinking ahead. And for our clients, our innovations have made all the difference.

As pioneers in complex underground and heavy civil construction, we’ve always looked to the cutting edge. We encourage all our teams to think beyond boundaries, and we’ve committed the resources to put new ideas to work.

For the Tren Urbano mass transit subway in San Juan, Puerto Rico, we had to be creative, working beneath historic, densely populated urban areas, providing all tunnel structural design. On a complex, 4-tunnel rail turnout, we employed the New Austrian Tunneling Method, with some of the tunnels less than 3 feet (1 m) apart. And for the Río Piedras mined station, one of the largest diameter soil tunnels ever constructed, we used the stacked drift method, creating a tunnel lining consisting of 15 individual tunnels backfilled with concrete that form a giant horseshoe-shaped arch.

Every challenge inspires us, no matter what our role. In Marin County, California, we provided construction management (CM) services for the Cal Park Tunnel, rehabilitating an abandoned railroad passage for both commuter rail and pedestrian/bike use. And across the Midwest, our CM personnel worked with Norfolk Southern on 24 tunnels, many over 100 years old, to accommodate faster, double-stack freight trains.

Every step of the way, we’re committed to our clients, with world-class engineering and consulting services.
