The San Vicente Pipeline project involves the construction of an 8-1/2
foot diameter water pipeline in an 11 mile long tunnel in San Diego,
California. The tunnel will be excavated in extremely variable geologic
conditions consisting of strong granitic and metamorphic rocks, weak
sedimentary rocks, abrasive conglomerates, and mixed face conditions.
This paper discusses the challenging geologic conditions and some of
the key design evaluations for the project. Currently design work for
the project has been completed and construction will be underway by mid-2005.
