Microtunneling has become an established method for constructing pipelines in the US, particularly in urban areas. There have been and continue to be new developments in microtunneling that will extend this method to even a greater range of projects. Other new developments promise to improve the cost-effectiveness of this important construction method. This paper reviews some of these new developments with a focus on some of the more innovative equipment features, installation procedures, and design approaches that have been developed.
